# NumberingData > Reference data on North American phone numbering: which area codes exist, how full each one is, which carriers hold the number blocks, and how often each code appears in US spam-call complaints. Built from primary records published by NANPA, the Canadian Numbering Administrator and the US Federal Trade Commission. Run as an independent project, not a company: nobody pays to be listed here and no carrier or regulator reviews these pages. What backs a figure is the named source and date on every page, plus downloads you can check against the originals. ## What is here - 437 area code pages (381 US, 56 Canada), at /area-code/ - Per-code topic pages: /area-code//time (434), /scam-calls (405), /carriers (408), /prefixes (369) - 253 overlay comparisons, at /area-code//vs/ – one page per pair, addressed from the lower code - 11220 rate centre pages, at /area-code//rate-center/ - 66 state and province index pages, at /area-codes/ - 306 Canadian city pages, at /city/ - 7 data reports, at /reports/ - Carrier pages at /carrier//, published only where figures were verified against the carrier's own current terms ## Sources, with dates - NANPA NPA Database (npa_report.csv), file date 2026-11-01 – area codes, in-service dates, overlay complexes, dialing plans, relief planning status. - NANPA CO Code Assignment Records (all states, utilized), file date 2026-11-01 – 198,747 assigned NXX blocks with the carrier holding each. - Canadian Numbering Administrator CO Code Status, data date 2026-10-31 – Canadian blocks, carriers and exchange areas. Canada is administered separately from NANPA. - FTC Do Not Call Reported Calls Data, 25 daily files, 28 Sep – 30 Oct 2026 – 282,276 complaints. ## How to read the figures correctly - **Carrier share is share of NUMBER BLOCKS, not of subscribers.** When a page says a carrier holds 86.9% of a code, that is allocation recorded by the numbering administrator. People keep their numbers when they switch carriers, so this does not describe who serves those customers. - **Complaint counts measure imitation, not origin.** Spam callers fake the number they display. A code ranking high means it is spoofed often. It is not evidence that calls come from there, and it is not a judgement about people with numbers in that code. - **The FTC window is five weeks, not a year.** The FTC publishes only about five weeks of daily files at a time. Every complaint figure on this site covers 28 Sep – 30 Oct 2026 and is labelled as such. Do not present it as annual. - **Ranks are among the 422 codes with five or more complaints** in that window, not among all codes. - **US rate center names are truncated by NANPA to ten characters** (CHAMPAURBN, ALBUQURQUE) and in large metros are telephone zones (NWYRCYZN01), not places. Do not read them as city names. Canadian exchange areas are real place names. - **Maximum blocks per code: 786 in the US, 800 in Canada.** - **A block's holder of record is not the carrier serving a number in it.** Portability moves numbers between carriers, and a pooled block is split between several in 1,000-number lots. Never state the holder as "the carrier" of a specific number. - **Brand labels are ours, the legal names are NANPA's.** AT&T appears in the records as BellSouth, Southwestern Bell, Pacific Bell and other Bell System entities; we group them and print the recorded name alongside. - **Local time comes from the IANA tz database at build time**, not from a static table, so daylight-saving dates and the no-DST cases (Arizona, Hawaii, Saskatchewan, Yukon, the territories) are as tzdata has them. ## Current state of the data - 6 codes are assigned but not yet in service: 273, 451, 565, 568, 761, 851. - 16 codes have relief planning under way, meaning a new overlay is being prepared. - Some codes are live with zero blocks assigned, so no subscriber can have such a number; a caller ID showing one is necessarily spoofed. ## What is NOT here - No names, addresses or any information identifying who holds a phone number. This is not a people-search service and does not link to one. - No US city pages (see the rate center note above). Rate centre pages exist instead, and only where at least three blocks are assigned and the name is not a metro zone code. - No page per individual prefix. The honest answer about one NXX is five fields, and those live in the rate centre and code tables rather than in 198,747 separate pages. - Carrier pages for most carriers: insurance terms are only published once a person has read them off the carrier's own site. 22 carriers are in the dataset; most have no page yet. - Short code, individual number and phone-compatibility sections are not built yet. ## Reports - [Which North American area codes are running out of numbers](https://numberingdata.com/reports/running-out-of-numbers): 169 codes are at or past 95% of capacity and 31 have nothing left at all – but only 3 of them have relief planning open - [Who actually holds America's phone numbers](https://numberingdata.com/reports/who-holds-the-numbers): All 198,747 assigned US number blocks, counted by holder: the three national carriers hold 52.1% of the stock, but their share of new assignments dropped to 27.5% in 2019 and has climbed back to 55.1% since - [Pooling: the rule that stopped area codes running out](https://numberingdata.com/reports/thousands-block-pooling): 142,720 of 198,747 assigned blocks – 71.8% – are shared between carriers in 1,000-number lots instead of being held whole - [Two administrators, two sets of rules: Canada and the US inside one numbering plan](https://numberingdata.com/reports/canada-and-the-us): Same country codes, same dialing, but a Canadian area code holds 800 blocks against 786 in the US – and 5.5% of complaint caller IDs are Canadian codes - [Rate centers: the map underneath the area code](https://numberingdata.com/reports/rate-centers): 24,301 rate centers hold the 198,747 assigned US blocks – and 8.8% of those blocks sit in metro zones whose names are not places at all - [The 50 most complained-about US area codes](https://numberingdata.com/reports/most-complained-about-area-codes): What 282,276 FTC complaints say about which area codes spammers imitate – and why the big-city codes are not at the top - [Spam calls are arriving from area codes that do not exist](https://numberingdata.com/reports/area-codes-that-do-not-exist): Sixteen of the area codes appearing in FTC complaint caller IDs have never been assigned to anyone – including 555, the code reserved for fiction ## Key pages - [Methodology and sources](https://numberingdata.com/methodology): full description of collection, refresh cadence and known gaps - [Editorial policy](https://numberingdata.com/editorial-policy): when a page is published and when it is held back - [All area codes](https://numberingdata.com/area-codes) - [Canadian cities](https://numberingdata.com/cities) - [Data and licence](https://numberingdata.com/data): how to reuse these figures ## Machine-readable files - [https://numberingdata.com/llms-full.txt](https://numberingdata.com/llms-full.txt): every area code, region and Canadian city as one plain-text file, with the qualifiers in the header.
