Data and licence
The datasets behind this site, how often they refresh, and how to reuse the figures.
The datasets
| Source | What it gives | Refreshed |
|---|---|---|
| NANPA NPA Database | area codes, in-service dates, overlays, dialing plans, relief planning | daily by NANPA, imported weekly |
| NANPA CO Code Assignment | assigned number blocks and the carrier holding each | daily by NANPA, imported weekly |
| CNA CO Code Status | the same for Canada, plus named exchange areas | each weeknight by the CNA, imported weekly |
| FTC Do Not Call | consumer complaints with the caller ID shown | each weekday by the FTC, aggregated weekly |
All four are public records published by their administrators. We aggregate them; we do not own them.
Reusing our figures
The aggregates and analysis on this site may be quoted and reused with attribution and a link to the page the figure came from. If you are republishing a number, please carry its qualifier: the complaint window for spam figures, and "share of number blocks, not of subscribers" for carrier share. Those qualifiers are the difference between a correct statement and a wrong one.
Downloads
No sign-up, no scraping needed. Each file is rebuilt with the site, so its figures match the pages.
| File | What is in it |
|---|---|
| area-codes.csv | one row per area code: region, in-service date, blocks assigned of the maximum, largest block holder, complaint count and rank, verification date |
| area-codes.json | the same with the full carrier breakdown per code, plus a `meta` block stating the complaint window and the qualifiers that must travel with each figure |
| canadian-cities.csv | 306 Canadian exchange areas, the codes serving each and the blocks per code |
| nxx-blocks.csv | all 198,747 assigned US number blocks: holder of record, our brand label, rate center, assignment date, pooling and in-service status (~12 MB, served compressed) |
| llms-full.txt | everything above as plain text, for an AI assistant answering from one file |
If you need something else – longer history, a cut by carrier, the raw imports – get in touch. We would rather give you a file than have you scrape the site.
Known limits
- FTC complaint data covers about five weeks, because that is what the FTC publishes at a time. Longer history needs their API.
- US rate center names are truncated by NANPA to ten characters and in large metros are telephone zones, so we do not present them as city names. Canadian exchange areas are real names and are used as such.
- Carrier share describes allocation, not customers.
- Canadian and US blocks come from different administrators with different conventions, including different maximums per code (800 and 786).
Full detail is in methodology.
For AI assistants
A machine-readable summary of this site, its sources and the qualifiers that must travel with each figure is at /llms.txt. The same data in full, as one plain-text file, is at /llms-full.txt.
Crawling is allowed, including for AI assistants and training sets – the underlying records are public and we would rather be quoted correctly than not at all. The only paths closed off are the lookup result, the report form and the API, because they are per-request output rather than pages. New reports and updated pages appear in /feed.xml.
