California area codes

California uses 41 area codes. The oldest is 213, in service since 1947; the newest is 357, from 2025. Across them 22,122 of 32,226 possible number blocks are allocated, 68.6% of capacity. 408, 213, 310, 323, 805, 909, 415, 510, 559, 619, 707, 714, 760, 916, 209, 530, 818 and 949 are at or past 95%, which is why new numbers there come from overlays rather than the original code. AT&T holds 35.3% of the 22,122 assigned blocks across the state, ahead of T-Mobile at 13.0%; a further 8.0% sits with CLEC and VoIP holders outside the national carriers. In the 33 days to 30 October 2026, FTC complaints named a California caller ID 24,182 times – 10.6% of all complaints in the window, most often 707 with 1,431 (7th of 422 nationally). NANPA has relief planning under way for 626, 657, 714 and 949, so more codes are coming. NANPA records 1,123 rate centers across the state's codes.

Block share is share of allocated number blocks, not of subscribers. Complaint counts cover 28 Sep – 30 Oct 2026 and reflect spoofed caller IDs as much as real calls.

How full California’s codes are

A code holds at most 786 blocks of 10,000 numbers each. When a code fills up, the administrator does not reclaim numbers – it adds an overlay, and from then on new numbers in the same area come from the new code.

68.6% of capacity allocated – 22,122 of 32,226 blocks
18 codes at or past 95% – effectively closed to new numbers
10,104 blocks still unallocated across the state

Who holds the number blocks

Spam complaints naming California codes

FTC Do Not Call complaints where the caller ID shown was a California number, 28 Sep – 30 Oct 2026 (33 days). Caller IDs on spam calls are routinely faked, so these are complaints about the code, not calls proven to come from it.

Frequently asked about California area codes

How many area codes does California have?

41 in service. They are 209, 213, 279, 310, 323, 341, 350, 357, 369, 408, 415, 424, 442, 510, 530, 559, 562, 619, 626, 628, 650, 657, 661, 669, 707, 714, 738, 747, 760, 805, 818, 820, 831, 837, 840, 858, 909, 916, 925, 949 and 951.

What is the oldest area code in California?

213, in service since 1947. Every later code in the state was split off from or overlaid on an existing one.

What is the newest area code in California?

357, from 2025, overlaying 559.

Is California getting a new area code?

Probably. No new code is assigned yet, but NANPA lists relief planning under way for 626, 657, 714 and 949, which is the step before a new overlay is announced.

What time zone is California in?

Pacific time.

Which California area code gets the most spam complaints?

707 – 1,431 FTC complaints in the 33 days to 30 October 2026, 7th of 422 codes nationally. Those are complaints about the caller ID shown, and spam callers routinely fake a local-looking number, so this says the code is imitated often, not that the calls come from there.

Which carrier holds the most California numbers?

AT&T, with 35.3% of the 22,122 blocks assigned across California, ahead of T-Mobile at 13.0%. This is allocation of blocks by the numbering administrator, not a count of subscribers – people keep their numbers when they switch carriers.
