New York area codes
New York uses 23 area codes. The oldest is 212, in service since 1947; the newest is 465, from 2026. Across them 12,060 of 18,078 possible number blocks are allocated, 66.7% of capacity. 212, 347, 917, 516, 845, 631, 315, 646, 718, 518 and 716 are at or past 95%, which is why new numbers there come from overlays rather than the original code. Verizon holds 36.3% of the 12,060 assigned blocks across the state, ahead of T-Mobile at 13.6%; a further 10.4% sits with CLEC and VoIP holders outside the national carriers. In the 33 days to 30 October 2026, FTC complaints named a New York caller ID 9,149 times – 4.0% of all complaints in the window, most often 631 with 819 (94th of 422 nationally). Block share is share of allocated number blocks, not of subscribers. Complaint counts cover 28 Sep – 30 Oct 2026 and reflect spoofed caller IDs as much as real calls.
How full New York’s codes are
A code holds at most 786 blocks of 10,000 numbers each. When a code fills up, the administrator does not reclaim numbers – it adds an overlay, and from then on new numbers in the same area come from the new code.
Full or nearly full
465, 624 are in service with no blocks assigned at all, so nobody can hold a number there yet – a caller ID showing one is necessarily spoofed.
Who holds the number blocks
Counted from every assigned block in the state: 12,060 blocks, each with the holder NANPA recorded for it. Percentages are measured, not estimated.
| Holder | Blocks | Share of New York | Largest in |
|---|---|---|---|
| Verizon | 4,379 | 36.3% | 12 codes |
| T-Mobile | 1,640 | 13.6% | 2 codes |
| AT&T | 1,322 | 11% | – |
| Other CLEC / VoIP | 1,256 | 10.4% | 4 codes |
| Onvoy | 632 | 5.2% | 2 codes |
| Lumen | 551 | 4.6% | – |
| Windstream | 500 | 4.1% | – |
| Bandwidth | 397 | 3.3% | – |
| Charter | 393 | 3.3% | – |
| Frontier | 378 | 3.1% | 1 code |
| Spok | 225 | 1.9% | – |
| Altice | 160 | 1.3% | – |
“Other CLEC / VoIP” is not one company: it is every holder outside the national carriers counted together, which is what resellers and app-based numbers look like in the records. This is allocation, not subscribers.
Spam complaints naming New York codes
FTC Do Not Call complaints where the caller ID shown was a New York number, 28 Sep – 30 Oct 2026 (33 days). Caller IDs on spam calls are routinely faked, so these are complaints about the code, not calls proven to come from it.

Which New York area code gets the most spam complaints?
631 – 819 FTC complaints in the 33 days to 30 October 2026, 94th of 422 codes nationally. Those are complaints about the caller ID shown, and spam callers routinely fake a local-looking number, so this says the code is imitated often, not that the calls come from there.

Verizon, with 36.3% of the 12,060 blocks assigned across New York, ahead of T-Mobile at 13.6%. This is allocation of blocks by the numbering administrator, not a count of subscribers – people keep their numbers when they switch carriers.
